de la plong\u00e9e a d\u00e9velopp\u00e9 ses\u00a0 propres particularit\u00e9s en termes d&#8217;\u00e9tiquette, <a href=\"https:\/\/bluejapan.org\/fr\/culture\/#diving-japanese-style\">d&#8217;approche et de culture de la plong\u00e9e.<\/a> et se distingue par certains aspects plus pratiques que nous allons aborderons ici.<\/p><p>Il faut garder \u00e0 l&#8217;esprit que plong\u00e9e japonaise actuelle est l&#8217;h\u00e9riti\u00e8re d&#8217;une assez longue tradition, d\u00e9velopp\u00e9e dans un isolement partiel d\u00e9coulant principalement en raison de la <strong>barri\u00e8re que constitue la langue japonaise<\/strong>.<br \/>Ceci est vrai tant dans l&#8217;archipel qu&#8217;\u00e0 l&#8217;\u00e9tranger, o\u00f9 les plongeurs japonais pr\u00e9f\u00e9reront, dans l&#8217;ensemble, plonger dans des structures offrant des services en japonais, et fonctionnant dans le cadre des codes culturels nippons.<br \/>Ce isolement relatif permis de d\u00e9velopper et renforcer certaines tendances et pratiques parfois un peu surprenantes, que nous allons pr\u00e9senter bri\u00e8vement \u00e0 travers les pages de ce site.<\/p><p>Mais le Japon est loin d&#8217;\u00eatre le seul pays dans ce cas.<\/p><p>Prenons par exemple la culture de la plong\u00e9e la plus r\u00e9pandue en France m\u00e9tropolitaine, qui se pratique dans le cadre des normes strictes d&#8217;une loi fran\u00e7aise juridiquement contraignante (le <a href=\"https:\/\/www.legifrance.gouv.fr\/codes\/id\/LEGISCTA000022417869\/2010-07-02\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Code du sport<\/a>), en osmose avec les standards de <a href=\"https:\/\/www.plongee-plaisir.com\/fr\/les-organismes-denseignement\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-wplink-edit=\"true\">f\u00e9d\u00e9rations fran\u00e7aises<\/a> affili\u00e9es (elles-m\u00eame affili\u00e9es \u00e0 la <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/CMAS\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CMAS<\/a>, dont la France est un membre fondateur et important).<\/p><p>Cette plong\u00e9e fran\u00e7aise (parfois appel\u00e9 <strong><em>\u00e9cole fran\u00e7aise de plong\u00e9e<\/em><\/strong>, souvent avec une certaine fiert\u00e9 qui n&#8217;est pas sans rappeler celle qu&#8217;attachent les guides nippons au le <strong><em>style japonais d&#8217;encadrement <\/em><\/strong><em>des plongeurs<\/em>) est soutenue par une vie associative tr\u00e8s active et une forte pratique en club (\u00e0 tel point que les plongeurs francophones appelent souvent toutes les structures organisant de plong\u00e9e, quelles qu&#8217;elles soient, des <em>clubs de plong\u00e9e&#8230;<\/em>), pr\u00e9sente un profil quelque peu similaire en terme d&#8217;isolation (relative) et d&#8217;autor\u00e9f\u00e9rence culturelle.<\/p><p>En effet, la plong\u00e9e fran\u00e7aise, comme la plong\u00e9e japonaise, s&#8217;organisent toutes deux dans son propre cadre de r\u00e9f\u00e9rentiel, qui peut \u00eatre tout aussi surprenant pour des plongeurs qui y sont ext\u00e9rieurs&#8230;<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-c840896 premium-type-column elementor-widget class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Comme dans la plupart des pays asiatiques, la plong\u00e9e japonaise se pratique principalement <strong>sous une forte influence des normes du <a href=\"https:\/\/fr.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/World_Recreational_Scuba_Training_Council\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">RSTC<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p><p>Le RSTC, ou WRSTC,\u00a0 acronyme du <a href=\"https:\/\/wrstc.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>World Recreational Scuba Training Council<\/em><\/a>, et est un organisme cr\u00e9\u00e9 aux USA <strong>en 1999<\/strong> dans le but d&#8217;\u00e9tablir des <strong>normes minimales pour les formations de plong\u00e9e sous-marine de loisir<\/strong>, normes et standards partag\u00e9s par toutes les agences de certification qui y sont affili\u00e9es.<\/p><p>La plupart des agences affili\u00e9es sont d&#8217;origine nord-am\u00e9ricaine, et ont des motivations commerciales affirm\u00e9es.<br \/>Parmi elles, ont compte des\u00a0 organsisations telles que <a href=\"https:\/\/fr.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Professional_Association_of_Diving_Instructors\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">PADI<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/fr.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Scuba_schools_international\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">SSI<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/fr.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Scuba_Diving_International\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">SDI<\/a> ou la <a href=\"https:\/\/fr.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/National_Association_of_Underwater_Instructors\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NAUI<\/a>, qui partagent donc aujourd&#8217;hui des normes de formation communes, et d\u00e9livrent certification aux niveaux unifi\u00e9s, pour les plongeurs, encadrants et formateurs (<em>Open Water Diver, Advanced Open Water Diver, Rescue Diver, Divemaster, Instructeur<\/em> etc\u2026).<\/p><p>Il est important de sp\u00e9cifier que ces agences ne r\u00e9glementent en fait\u00a0 uniquement <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">les formations de plongeurs<\/span>, et non la pratique pour les de plongeurs certifi\u00e9s.<\/p><p>Cependant, l&#8217;influence des normes appliqu\u00e9es lors des formations des plongeurs et aussi celles des encadrants influe fortement sur l&#8217;organisation m\u00eame des plong\u00e9es r\u00e9cr\u00e9atives \/ d&#8217;explorations&#8221; \/ <em>fun-dives,\u00a0<\/em>m\u00eame lorsqu&#8217;aucune formation n&#8217;est propos\u00e9e (ce que certains plongeurs surnomment la <em>plong\u00e9e de type PADI).<\/em><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-1ad7039 elementor-widget elementor-widget-image\" data-id=\"1ad7039\" existe par exemple un certain nombre de f\u00e9d\u00e9rations affili\u00e9es \u00e0 la <a href=\"https:\/\/fr.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Conf%C3%A9d%C3%A9ration_mondiale_des_activit%C3%A9s_subaquatiques\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>CMAS<\/strong><\/a> au Japon, ainsi que des clubs et des structures appliquant les normes CMAS souvent plus exigeantes pour le passage des niveaux de plongeur (Plongeur CMAS Une \u00c9toile* , CMAS Deux \u00c9toiles*, CMAS Trois \u00c9toiles ***\/Guide de palanqu\u00e9e \/ <em>Dive Leader<\/em>, etc.).<br \/><br \/>Le <a href=\"https:\/\/fr.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/British_Sub-Aqua_Club\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>BSAC<\/strong><\/a> (British Sub-Aqua Club (qui applique des standards similaires \u00e0 ceux de la CMAS dont il \u00e9tait autrefois membre) est \u00e9galement bien implant\u00e9, et il existe aussi des agences ax\u00e9es sur la <strong>plong\u00e9e technique \/ <em>tek<\/em><\/strong>.<br \/><br \/>Cependant, les normes de formation les plus courantes, ainsi que le style de plong\u00e9e loisir qui en d\u00e9coule sont le plus souvent directement issues des normes de formation RSTC.<br \/>Ceci s&#8217;explique aussi en partie par les liens historiques qui unissent le Japon et les \u00c9tats-Unis, o\u00f9 fut d\u00e9velopp\u00e9 le mod\u00e8le RSTC, depuis la fin de la Seconde Guerre mondiale.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-ca2d9c8 elementor-widget elementor-widget-image\" \/ RSTC, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.padi.co.jp\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>PADI <\/strong><\/a> est actuellement le leader du march\u00e9 dans le pays.<br \/><strong>La branche japonaise de PADI Asie-Pacifique a d\u00e9livr\u00e9 plus de 2 millions de certifications<\/strong> depuis la cr\u00e9ation du premier bureau international \u00e0 T\u014dky\u014d en 1979, ce qui conf\u00e8re au Japon la place de <em>deuxi\u00e8me pays au monde en nombre de plongeurs certifi\u00e9s par PADI<\/em>.<\/p><p>Cependant, la premi\u00e8re agence non affili\u00e9e \u00e0 la CMAS \u00e0 s&#8217;\u00eatre implant\u00e9e dans le pays \u00e9tait en fait la <a href=\"https:\/\/www.naui.co.jp\/welcome\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>NAUI<\/strong><\/a>, qui a \u00e9tabli une premi\u00e8re base au Japon seulement quelques ann\u00e9es apr\u00e8s la cr\u00e9ation de l&#8217;agence en 1960.<br \/>Un <a href=\"https:\/\/fr.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/National_Association_of_Underwater_Instructors\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ICC (session de formation de formateurs) NAUI<\/a> a eu lieu au Japon en 1970, et constitue le premier programme d&#8217;enseignement de la plong\u00e9e sous-marine non CMAS du pays, pr\u00e8s d&#8217;une d\u00e9cennie avant l&#8217;arriv\u00e9e de PADI sur le march\u00e9 japonais.<br \/>En raison de son histoire particuli\u00e8re, la NAUI est toujours bien repr\u00e9sent\u00e9e au Japon, en particulier chez les plongeurs plus \u00e2g\u00e9s et aussi dans la r\u00e9gion d&#8217;Okinawa.<\/p><p>Et comme ailleurs en Asie, les centres de plong\u00e9e affili\u00e9s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/divessi\/posts\/ssi-japan-\/191205020996981\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>SSI<\/strong><\/a> sont en constante augmentation, et <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tdisdi.com\/community\/japan\/?lang=th_th\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>SDI\/TDI<\/strong><\/a> renforce aussi sa pr\u00e9sence dans le pays (cet organisme est particuli\u00e8rement appr\u00e9ci\u00e9 pour les passerelles qu&#8217;il offre aux plongeurs loisirs vers les programmes de plong\u00e9e technique de l&#8217;agence principale, <a href=\"https:\/\/fr.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Technical_Diving_International\" target=\"_blank\" de plong\u00e9e industrielle (scaphandriers), son influence s&#8217;\u00e9tend \u00e0 la plong\u00e9e loisir, puisque les moniteurs de plong\u00e9e exer\u00e7ant professionnellement au Japon devraient, en th\u00e9orie, tous d\u00e9tenir un <strong>Brevet d&#8217;\u00c9tat de plongeur professionnel<\/strong>, le <a href=\"https:\/\/ja.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/%E6%BD%9C%E6%B0%B4%E5%A3%AB\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><em>Sensui-shi Menkyo<\/em><\/strong> <strong>\u6f5c\u6c34\u58eb\u514d\u8a31<\/strong><\/a>, pour avoir le droit de travailler l\u00e9galement dans les eaux japonaises.<\/p><p>Les agences de formation comme PADI prennent en compte cette sp\u00e9cificit\u00e9 nationale, comme sur cette <a href=\"https:\/\/ja.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/%E6%BD%9C%E6%B0%B4%E5%A3%AB\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>page <\/strong><\/a>destin\u00e9e aux futurs encadrants japonais, clarifiant certains points d&#8217;articulation entre le statut d&#8217;instructeur et le brevet d&#8217;\u00c9tat japonais.<\/p><p>La <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sensui.or.jp\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Japan Dive Association (JDA) <\/strong><\/a> repr\u00e9sente par ailleurs les plongeurs professionnels (scaphandriers, moniteurs ou autres) agr\u00e9\u00e9s.<\/p><p>Pr\u00e9cisons qu&#8217;il ne s&#8217;agit pas l\u00e0 d&#8217;un \u00ab Code du sport \u00bb, \u00e0 l&#8217;image du cadre juridique fran\u00e7ais par exemple, o\u00f9 tous les moniteurs sportifs sont tenus d&#8217;\u00eatre titulaires d&#8217;un brevet d&#8217;\u00c9tat pour \u00eatre autoris\u00e9s \u00e0 enseigner en \u00e9tant r\u00e9mun\u00e9r\u00e9s pour leurs activit\u00e9s.<\/p><p>Il s&#8217;agit plut\u00f4t d&#8217;un cadre l\u00e9gislatif visant \u00e0 r\u00e9gir toutes les activit\u00e9s professionnelles en milieu hyperbare, constitut\u00e9 d&#8217;une s\u00e9rie de lois nationales encadrant le travail, la s\u00e9curit\u00e9 et la sant\u00e9 qui imposent certaines restrictions pratiques.<\/p><p>\u00c0 titre d&#8217;exemple, l&#8217;article 15 de l&#8217;<em>Ordonnance sur la s\u00e9curit\u00e9 et la sant\u00e9 au travail en conditions hyperbares<\/em> (<a href=\"https:\/\/elaws.e-gov.go.jp\/document?lawid=347M50002000040_20200828_502M60000100154\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u9ad8\u6c17\u5727\u4f5c\u696d\u5b89\u5168\u885b\u751f\u898f\u5247<\/a>) r\u00e9glemente la pression partielle maximale d&#8217;azote autoris\u00e9e dans les gaz respiratoires \u00e0 400 kPa (c&#8217;est-\u00e0-dire 4 bar), ce qui correspond \u00e0 peu pr\u00e8s \u00e0 la PpN2 atteinte lors d&#8217;une plong\u00e9e \u00e0 l&#8217;air \u00e0 41m, profondeur elle-m\u00eame arrondie \u00e0 40m dans le texte.<\/p><p>Le but de cette disposition l\u00e9gale est avant tout de contraindre les plongeurs professionnels \u00e0 un certain conservatisme dans l&#8217;approche et la gestion de la narcose gazeuse.<\/p><p>Mais dans les faits, cette disposition limite la profondeur maximale l\u00e9galement autoris\u00e9e pour toute plong\u00e9e utilisant l&#8217;air comme gaz respiratoire opportunities for easy-access shore diving, divers actually rarely practice completely autonomous, unguided diving, unlike in the North American context, for instance.<br \/>Although there are exceptions, Japan is not generally a place where certified divers can just show up and a dive centre, rent tanks and weights, and go do their thing.<\/p><p>Unguided shore diving is not really encouraged in the country, and most structures i.e. dive clubs and dive centres, will not generally rent tanks, even to certified and qualified advanced divers, if they do not know them, for safety and responsibility. <br \/>Some areas might also have specific local rules, stating that all visiting divers must be accompanied by a local dive guide.<br \/>There are exceptions of course, such as the previously mentioned Izu Ocean Park (Shizuoka Pref.), where divers have free use of the facilities and rental equipment, organising their own two dives within a set timeframe.<br \/><br \/><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-d45a0d4 elementor-widget elementor-widget-image\" data-id=\"d45a0d4\" Japan, most locally organised diving, whether directly from shore or from a boat, will be guided diving, mostly led by a local dive guide following teaching standards and \u201cgood practices\u201d given by RSTC organizations.<\/p><p>This is actually often preferable, because good local guides will generally allow you to make the most of your dive through their intimate knowledge of the dive site, and for safety, since conditions can change easily (and let\u2019s not forget the Kuroshio flows at an average of 3 knots in some places off the coast of Japan, which would mean quite a drift for divers caught directly in the main flow\u2026)<\/p><p>And importantly, since this one of the distinctive traits of Japanese diving, local dive guides will frequently be highly knowledgeable when it comes to the local underwater fauna and flora (which is particularly appreciated by photographers), as both dive centres and guides they employ make a point of acting as ambassadors of the local environment they represent.<\/p><p>Japanese guides generally go beyond the traditional roles of \u201c<em>divemaster<\/em>\u201d and \u201c<em>eagle-eyed local spotter<\/em>\u201d, and this rarely found elsewhere, except perhaps in certain contexts employing marine biology specialists, or macro-diving specialised areas like Lembeh in Indonesia, for instance. <br \/>More on Japanese-style dive class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><strong>Snorkeling is common, freediving less so.<\/strong><br \/>Japan also offers some good<strong> snorkeling<\/strong> options, but these are mostly concentrated in the southern subtropical areas (Nansei islands, Okinawa region), where shallow coral reefs can be accessed from the beach.<br \/>Beware though, some industrial snorkeling operations found in the Okinawa area not really up to standard, and reef fish feeding was unfortuantely still quite widespread until recently (something also found for <em>discover scuba diving \/ try-dives<\/em> offered to non-certified divers).<\/p><p>In other parts of the country, snorkeling.skin diving activities may be limited by water temperatures, sea conditions and rocky shorelines \u2013 this is not always the case though, and the Nanp\u014d archipelago, for instance, offers good snorkeling spots and guided snorkeling tours, despite more rocky conditions.<\/p><p>For more serious \/ experienced snorkelers and freedivers, Japanese waters have the potential to offer great experiences, including open water options and the chance to get in the water with large marine mammals, notably dolphins in Mikura-jima and Miyake-jima in the Izu islands, and also, in the cooler season, with migrating whales, especially to the north of Okinawa.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-6117184 elementor-widget elementor-widget-image\" data-id=\"6117184\" class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>These activities are usually called something like &#8220;<em>whale swim<\/em>&#8221; or &#8220;<em>dolphin swim<\/em>&#8220;, and while some operators do a great job, you might encounter a great variety in operating standards and practices, notably in terms intrusiveness, awareness and respect of the animal&#8217;s well-being across the country.<\/p><p>Some areas like the Ogasawara islands forbid entering the water less than 100 to 150 metres from whales, depending on the species, which limits in water interraction.<br \/>This kind of rule might be extended to other areas in the future.<\/p><p>Finally, there is also the possibility to organise a shallow-water freediving experience with <em>ama<\/em> traditional freedivers in the Kansai region (more on this here).<br \/>Breath-hold spearfishing is generally off-limits in Japan, as it requires a permit from local fisheries in most places, pernmit which is not open to non-Japanese nationals, but there might be regional exceptions.<\/p><p>As elsewhere in the world, the freediving community is growing, helped by the fact that Japan has has good results in the competitive freediving scene, including some world record holders in different categories.<br \/>Beyond entry-level training, nost of the modern freediving action seems concentrated in the Okinawa region, but this may change in the future&#8230;<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section all-inclusive diving resorts also offering accommodation and dining options, especially in more remote areas, and everything in between (dive centres able to organise accommodation, etc\u2026).<\/p><p><span lang=\"EN-US\">In most tourism-oriented coastal towns and islands, dive operators will usually have some sort of accomodation option available (hotel, homestay or dorm or a <i>minshuku <\/i>Japanese style bed and breakfast lodgings), either as cooperation between the dive operator and the hospitality provider, or actually part of the dive business itself.<br \/>Because of this, divers will generally have access to some type of package deal including accommodation and meals in a convenient (and often tasty) <strong>all-in-one package<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-41b3ea5 elementor-widget elementor-widget-image\" data-id=\"41b3ea5\" which offer a hybrid service, somewhere between a diving-club and a travel agent. <br \/>These city-based dive centres usually organise regular (weekly or more) diving excursions to different areas of the archipelago.<br \/>Some of these urban structures take the form of an associative club, with membership fees, but most are simply commercial structures responsible for organising training sessions and diver certification, as well as selling\/renting equipment and taking care of diving logistics for the divers who pay for their services.<\/p><p>These structures will generally offer some sort of transportation service, and can often take care of all the organisational aspects of a dive outing, which is very handy for time-pressed Japanese divers.<br \/>On a cultural side note, you&#8217;ll see many Japanese operators calling their dive centres XYZ <i>diving service<\/i> or XYZ <i>marine service<\/i>, but this seems to be something of a trend and does not represent a specific business this is highly appreciated by Japanese staff, especially in more remote places where Japanese products are rare!<\/p><p>One place where we worked had a dedicated staff-fridge, always full of delicious Japanese snacks and other <a href=\"https:\/\/bluejapan.org\/fr\/links\/#giftculture\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>temiyage\/omiyage<\/em><\/a>, ranging from rice crackers and sweets to bottles of sh\u014dch\u016b liquor!<\/p><p>Korean divers often bring cosmetic facial masks as well, along with endless snacks. this is definitely something to look out for if you plan to dive in Japan in winter.<\/p><p>As a rule, it is <strong>best to check what sizes are available<\/strong>, as common clothing and <strong>foot sizes<\/strong> in Japan are generally smaller than those commonly found in other countries, which tends to restrict the availability of &#8220;large&#8221; sizes, both for hire and for sale, especially in dive centres not specialising in a non-Japanese clientele.<\/p><p><strong>Cylinders\/ dive tanks<\/strong> are generally made of <b>steel <\/b>(<strong>10L \/ 12\/ 14L<\/strong> steel tanks are the most common, some areas might have 18L as well), but <b>AL80 aluminium tanks<\/b> (11 litres) so common in tropical locations, are also used in the warmer waters of Okinawa, for example.<\/p><p>If you&#8217;ve never dived on steel tanks, the main difference with aluminium tanks is that they become <i>less negatively buoyant <\/i>at the end of the dive, as you breathe up the air they contain. <br \/>They never become <i>positively buoyant <\/i>at the end of the dive, unlike aluminium tanks. Maximum operating depths are calculated based on a maximum oxygen partial pressure\u00a0 of <strong>1.4 bar<\/strong> (and not 1.6 bar like, it is sometimes found some European countries, like France for instance).<\/p><p>When it comes to equipment setup,\u00a0 Japanese divers are usually quite self-sufficient, at least when it comes to <strong>setting up their own gear,<\/strong> especially if it&#8217;s their own personal equipment. <br \/>Some places might offer to do a basic set up of your equipment, as a service or for practical reasons, especially for boat dives, but this is <strong>not the norm<\/strong>, unlike<br \/>South-East Asia and other places where it is common for dive staff and\/or boat crew to setup customer&#8217;s gear for them.<\/p><p>If you would rather set up yourself (and we definitely think you should&#8230;), or not have anyone touch your own equipment, make sure to mention this at the dive centre, just in case&#8230;<\/p><p>For <strong>electronics<\/strong>, Japan uses <strong>100 V \/ 50\/60 Hz<\/strong> voltage (which is the lowest in the world, Europe being <span class=\"ILfuVd\"><span class=\"hgKElc\">220-240V and the United States 110-120V<\/span><\/span>) and <span class=\"ILfuVd\"><span class=\"hgKElc\">Type A plug sockets, which has two rectangular-pins, that are vertical to each other.<br \/>Most devices can handle lower voltages , but battery charging might be model provided by the RSTC agency to which the dive centre is affiliated (PADI, SSI, NAUI, SDI\u2026).<\/p><p>Should an accident occur, the exact legal value of these documents is difficult to establish in Japan (the Japanese legal system is complex, and something of a hybrid between civil and common law) but these documents are always required by operators, unlike in European legal contexts where liability release-type documents have little value and their use is now downplayed, or where they might be technically illegal, such as in the French context, where the operator is bound by law to accept responsability.<\/p><p>The dive centre staff should normally do everything they can to ensure your safety, but diving does engage a part of individual responsibility (\u81ea\u5df1\u8cac\u4efb, <em>jiko sekinin<\/em>, which has become a very common concept in Japan), and <strong>Japanese dive operators will normally not let you dive without a signature of these documents.<\/strong><\/p><p>Do note that some dive operators will only have a Japanese version ready to use, and you should, of course, not sign any documents that you cannot read.<\/p><p>When diving with a Japanese dive centre, we recommend that you <strong>check in advance that an English version of required forms will be available<\/strong> (all RSTC agencies make multilingual forms available free of charge online, but you must also know how to find them).<\/p><p>While it is always a good idea to do regular medical check-ups and get a doctor\u2019s clearance for diving (especially after entering middle-age and if planning to dive in more stressful conditions such as colder water or current, for instance), <strong>it is not a legal requirement in Japan to show recent medical certificate giving you clearance to dive,<\/strong> and Japanese dive centres will generally ask you to fill out with a <strong>standard RSTC medical questionnaire instead.<\/strong><\/p><p>Again, make sure that this document will be available in a language that you can read, and note that if you have to answer &#8220;<strong>yes<\/strong>&#8221; to any of the questions on the medical questionnaire, <strong><u>you will have to see a doctor<\/u><\/strong> (general practitioner) <strong>and<\/strong> <strong>obtain clearance<\/strong> to take part in diving activities.<\/p><p>This is in no way specific to diving in Japan, but you\u2019re not familiar with this kind of medical form and\/or think you might have a condition mentioned on it, it could be a good idea to ask the dive centre to see their medical questionnaire in advance, in order <strong>anticipate<\/strong> problems, <strong>and getting medical clearance, if required, before your recompression chamber treatement can be very expensive, often in the thousands of dollars per session, keeping in mind that full treatment might require a set of multiple sessions&#8230;<\/p><p>This is also in no way specific to diving in Japan, but we strongly advise divers to get<strong> specific insurance coverage, clearly covering planned diving activities and emergencies, including medical evacuation and hyperbaric treatments.<\/strong><\/p><p>Well-known specialised diving insurance provider such as <a href=\"https:\/\/dan.org\/membership-insurance\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>DAN<\/strong>,<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/diveassure.com\/en\/home\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>DiveAssure<\/strong><\/a><strong>,<\/strong> <b>Diveassist<\/b> are a good choice, and some insurance companies like Dive Assure offer packages covering the duration of a single trip.<br \/>Another option would be more general insurance policies that also cover recreational diving activities, such as those offered by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.worldnomads.com\/row\/travel-insurance\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>WorldNomads<\/strong><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/safetywing.com\/nomad-insurance\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>SafetyWings<\/strong><\/a> or others (but they probably won&#8217;t be as efficient in handling diving emergencies as specialist inssurance).<\/p><p>If you are already covered by general travel insurance, make sure to check that it does indeed cover your planning diving activities in Japan or elsewhere, and other key aspects such as hyperbaric recompression treatments and medical evacuation \/ repatriation from Japan.<\/p><p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.danjapan.gr.jp\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dan Japan<\/a> has a 24\/7 Japanese emergency hotline<br \/>+81-3-3812-4999, with an English-speaking operator available from Monday to Friday between 9am and 5pm at +81-45-228-3066 &#8211; the operator \/ medical team can give you advice if you have health concerns after a dive, whether you are a DAN member or not (but only member&#8217;s medical expenses are covered)<\/p><p>There are <strong>recompression chambers in most major cities<\/strong> and diving areas in Japan, but these can be <strong>relatively far from the dive sites<\/strong>, especially in a mountainous country like Japan.<br \/>Which means that it is always best to dive conservatively, within the guidelines given by your computer, to maintain slow ascent rates of 10m per minute max, and to remember to stay well hydrated before and after the dive.<br \/>It&#8217;s also best to go easy on sake, sh\u014dch\u016b liquor and other dehydrating beverages when diving the next day.<\/p><p>As a reminder, even though hot-springs are often found next to dive sites (at the Izu Ocean Park, for instance) and as incredibly tempting as it might seem, <b>hopping into the warm waters a hot-spring\/<i>onsen<\/i><\/b> <b>straight after a dive is<\/b> <b>not recommended<\/b> as it directly affects blood circulation, which could affect bubble formation and possibly interfere with cross-federation centralised diver database accessible online.<\/p><p>Most dive centre professionals will have no problem understanding your certification level, and the following (rough) equivalence dives<\/strong>. <br \/>As such, RSTC agencies do <strong>not specify any actual depth standards for recreational, \u201cfun diving\u201d<\/strong> outside of a training context, and simply recommend divers to stay \u201cwithin the limits of their training and experience\u201d, and <strong>not to dive deeper than 40m.<\/strong><br \/>This maximum depth is in line with Japanese legal requirements defining a maximum partial pressure of nitrogen when diving on air as a breathing gas, as specified by Article 15 of Japan\u2019s <em>Ordinance on Safety and Health for Work Under Hyperbaric Conditions.<\/em><\/p><p>This aspect is often misunderstood, even by some dive professionals themselves who <strong>wrongly believe RSTC training standards apply actually to \u201cfun dives\u201d<\/strong>. <br \/>In the chart above for instance, depth given for RSTC agencies refer to the maximum depths specified in their <strong>training standards.<\/strong><\/p><p>That said, one should keep in mind that, should an accident occur, the dive centre and dive professionals involved <u>will have to be able to justify their decisions and actions, under the angle of duty of care <\/u>( which is the legal obligation imposed on an individual to adhere to standards of reasonable care and avoid negligence while performing any acts that could foreseeably harm others).<br \/>Standards or not, this is why bringing an inexperienced, Open Water Diver level-trained diver to a depth of 30m+ might raise a few eyebrows, even if it is not a breach of RSTC standards <em>per se.<\/em><\/p><p>This is also why, in practice, most RSTC-affiliated<b> dive centres will usually apply the following maximum depths, <\/b>given for training dives in their agency standards, to actual exploration \/ &#8220;fun&#8221; dives :<\/p><p><strong>&#8211; 18m max for an Open Water diver<\/strong>, <strong><br \/>&#8211; 30m max for an Advanced Open Water diver<\/strong> or more, and <strong><br \/>&#8211; access to the 30 to 40m depth range given at the discretion of the dive centre\/guide<\/strong> <strong>and the diver<\/strong>, depending on their experience, comfort level and\/or training.<\/p><p>We hope this clears up the situation, and helps to understand why we <strong>all should respect a dive centre and\/or dive professional\u2019s sometimes conservative guidelines<\/strong>, and always <strong>respect the indications given in the dive briefing<\/strong> and local rules.<br \/>Even if this mean diving to a max depth of 30m while avoiding any mandatory
