Japan\u2019s \u201csea\u201d turtles are primarily green turtles <\/strong>(Chelonia mydas<\/em>), which nest in the Nansei and Nanp\u014d islands, hawksbill turtles<\/strong> (Eretmochelys imbricata<\/em>) that nest in the Ry\u016b-Ky\u016b archipelago and also loggerhead turtles<\/strong> (Caretta caretta) <\/em>which nest in Honsh\u016b, Shikoku, Ky\u016bsh\u016b, and the Nansei Islands.

<\/em>Other turtles such as the leatherback (Dermochelys coriacea) and Olive ridley (Lepidochelys olivacea) turtles do not nest in Japan, but often cruise offshore in Japanese waters.<\/p>

Southern Japan is thought to be the only loggerhead turtle breeding ground in the North Pacific.<\/strong>
Green and hawksbill turtle populations not only breed on Japanese coasts but also stay around, growing to maturity in the habitat provided by Japanese waters.

Shikine-jima, Hachij\u014d-jima<\/strong> and the other Izu islands<\/strong> are all famous for their turtle populations, including green turtles <\/strong>(Chelonia mydas<\/em>) and sometimes hawksbill turtles<\/strong> (Eretmochelys imbricata<\/em>)
Shikine-jima<\/strong> also has a spot where turtles like to relax in warmth of the hot springs<\/strong> that flow into the sea, a kind of reptilian alternative to Nagano\u2019s bathing \u201csnow monkey\u201d<\/p>

From February to August the Ogasawara\/Bonin Islands<\/strong> are said to become one of the biggest nesting ground of green turtles in Japan.<\/strong><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Loggerhead turtle<\/strong> (Caretta caretta<\/em>) nesting events<\/strong> take place in Tokushima Prefecture\u2019s Mugi area, from the end of June to July.

KY\u016aSH\u016a <\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

The three major types of turtles nest and evovle in the greater Ky\u016bsh\u016b area. Turtle are very common especially in the Satsunan Islands (Kagoshima Pref.), notably on the islands of Yakushima,<\/strong> Okinoerabujima<\/strong> and Yoron<\/strong> but also in Oita Prefecture\u2019s Hazako<\/strong>, and Miyazaki Prefecture\u2019s Nobeoka<\/strong>, the beaches of which are all seasonal turtle nesting sites<\/strong> (usually end of May to end of July).<\/p>

The Amami islands\u2019 Tokunoshima<\/strong>, is home to a famous green turtle with a mountain-shaped shell nicknamed Yama-chan <\/strong>(Yama <\/em>is mountain in Japanese), that has been entertaining divers in the shallows for over 10 years.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

OKINAWA<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Japan’s 3 main types of turtles can be reliably spotted on most of islands of the Okinawa region, which is home to large populations of hawksbill and green turtles<\/strong> (Eretmochelys imbricata<\/em> and Chelonia mydas<\/em>).

Turtles are particularly frequent on Miyako and the Yaeyama islands<\/strong> (Iriomote, Kuro, Ishigaki\u2026)<\/p>

They are also frequently seen in the Kerama islands<\/strong>, on sites such as Gishippu, which is home to healthy populations of hawksbill and green turtles<\/strong> (Eretmochelys imbricata<\/em> and Chelonia mydas<\/em>)<\/p>

Near Okinawa Main Island, Kudaka Island<\/strong> (south east of Naha) and the Chibishi Islands<\/strong> (west of Naha) are famous for their green turtle<\/strong> populations, as well as seasonal nesting of loggerhead turtles<\/strong> (Caretta caretta<\/em>).<\/p>

Kume island<\/strong>, 100 km west of Okinawa Main Island, has a site called Turtle Paradise (\u201cKame Paradise\u201d) <\/em>where it is sometimes possible to see 50 or more turtles resting on the reef.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t
