offering many excellent diving opportunities, with contrasting conditions. <br \/>In north Ky\u016bsh\u016b, <strong>visibility changes radically<\/strong> in the summer months, reaching 20m, but is usually quite low (5m more so) in winter.<br \/><br \/>Ky\u016bsh\u016b\u2019s diving is <strong>increasingly sub-tropical as you head south<\/strong>, but the north-west areas also feature relatively warm water, heated by the Kuroshio\u2019s Tsushima branch, which heads northwards along the west-coast of Japan\u2019s main islands.<\/p><p>From an administrative point of view, the official region is actually <em>Ky\u016bsh\u016b and Okinawa<\/em>, but we\u2019ll separate these two major diving areas for clarity, focusing on the <strong>main island of Ky\u016bsh\u016b and its surrounding islands.<br \/><\/strong>We&#8217;ll also include the <strong>Satsunan islands<\/strong>, which are the <strong>northern islands of the Nansei archipelago <\/strong>administered by south Ky\u016bsh\u016b\u2019s Kagoshima Prefecture. <br \/>Historically, the Satsunan islands were considered part of the Ry\u016b-Ky\u016b, as part of a continuum, but are now excluded by a recent official data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>In general, dive sites of Ky\u016bsh\u016b region offer a very<strong> special mix of temperate and subtropical <\/strong>diving, especially in the <strong>Got\u014d islands<\/strong> (Nagasaki Pref.) where you can see both cold water and warm marine life, including rather unique tropical species, along with colourful soft corals and hard coral colonies, brought by the Tsushima branch of the Kuroshio warm current.<br \/>Similarly, the <strong>Satsunan islands<\/strong> (Kagoshima Pref.) further south, especially <strong>Yoron Island<\/strong> (<em>Yoron-t\u014d<\/em>) offer an interesting seasonal mix of species.<\/p><p><strong>Amami \u014cshima<\/strong> (Kagoshima Pref.) is also a good place to observe the <strong>w<\/strong><strong>hite-spotted puffer fish<\/strong> (<em>Torquigener albomaculosus<\/em> ), made famous by a <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/hpdlQae5wP8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sequence<\/a> in the BBC\u2019s Blue Planet series, where we see it crafting beautiful circular design in the sandy seabed.<\/p><p>The oddly shaped <strong>Japanese horseshoe crab<\/strong> (<em>Tachypleus tridentatus<\/em>), an endangered crab species, is spotted in different areas, especially on <strong>Koi-no-ura island<\/strong> (Fukuoka Pref.). <br \/>It has blue blood, and it does somewhat look like something out of Ridley Scott\u2019s<em> Alien<\/em> movie franchise\u2026<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-924efdc elementor-widget-divider--view-line elementor-widget elementor-widget-divider\" data-id=\"924efdc\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"divider.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-6d20c66 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"6d20c66\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><strong>Schooling fish and predatory action<\/strong> are a common feature of Ky\u016bsh\u016b dive sites, especially on current-exposed offshore sites and remote islands. The main local predators are <strong>amberjacks, tuna, trevallies <\/strong>and<strong> mackerels.<\/strong><\/p><p>On <strong>Shikanoshima<\/strong> island in northern Ky\u016bsh\u016b (Fukuoka Pref.) large migratory fish such as <strong>greater amberjacks<\/strong> (<em>Seriola dumerili<\/em>) prey on big schools of Japanese horse mackerel (<em>Trachurus japonicus<\/em>).<\/p><p><strong>Big schools and predatory action<\/strong> can also be seen on the remote island of <strong>Okinoshima<\/strong> (Fukuoka Pref.), which is a sacred Shinto island and off-limits to women to this day.<br \/>Diving is done around the island, which is reached by a two-hour boat ride which can be organised by city-based operators.<br \/>Schools of fish are also one of the highlights of <strong>Miyazaki <\/strong>and<strong> Kagoshima Prefecture<\/strong>\u2019s numerous dive sites (especially areas exposed to currents at Kagoshima Prefecture\u2019s <strong>Sakurajima <\/strong>or <strong>Bonotsu<\/strong>, famous for its schools of <strong>amberjacks, tunas <\/strong>or<strong> rainbow runners<\/strong>.<\/p><p><strong>Big fish<\/strong> (but also sharks and rays) are also a strong feature of southern <strong>Satsunan Islands<\/strong> (Kagoshima Pref.), such as <strong>Amami \u014cshima<\/strong> or the <strong>Tokara islands (Kuchinoshima)<\/strong> famous for schools of <strong>bigeye trevally<\/strong> (<em>Caranx sexfasciatus<\/em>), <strong>giant trevallies<\/strong> (<em>Caranx ignobilis<\/em>) and <strong>dogtooth tuna<\/strong> (<em>Gymnosarda unicolor<\/em>) and other large migratory species, found all the way down to neighbouring Okinawa islands.<\/p><p>Still in the Satsunan Islands, the Amami archipelago&#8217;s <strong>Okinoerabujima<\/strong> is famous for its <strong>big ball of bigeye trevally<\/strong> (<em>Caranx sexfasciatus<\/em>), which can be seen all year round.<\/p><p>Amami \u014cshima is also famous for its large aggregations of <strong>Gilbert&#8217;s cardinal fish<\/strong> (<em>Zoramia gilberti<\/em>) found in large aggregations near coral reefs and sheltered lagoon Okinawa.<\/p><p>There have also been sightings of small schools of <strong>oceanic<\/strong> <strong>black tip sharks <\/strong>(<em>Carcharhinus limbatus<\/em>),<strong> tiger sharks <\/strong>(<em>Galeocerdo cuvier<\/em>),<strong> hammerhead sharks <\/strong>(<em>Sphyrna lewini<\/em>),<strong> spotted eagle rays <\/strong>(<em>Aetobatus narinari<\/em>),<strong> baitballs <\/strong> and other types of pelagic actions in the spring months around the <strong>Tokara\/Satsunan<\/strong> islands, especially on exploratory cruises.<\/p><p>Reef<strong> manta rays<\/strong> (<em>Mobula alfredi) <\/em>are regularly spotted in the <strong>Tokara <\/strong>islands, especially around <strong>Kuchinoshima, <\/strong>between the end of October to mid-May, and spotted eagle rays in the autumn months, and the occasional <strong>w<\/strong><strong>hale sharks<\/strong> (<em>Rhincodon typus<\/em>) have also occasionally been spotted.<br \/><strong>Eagle rays<\/strong> \u2013 is mostly done around the <strong>Amami <\/strong>or <strong>Tokara islands<\/strong>, but also up north. A large pod of wild Indo-Pacific<strong> bottlenose dolphin<\/strong> (<em>Tursiops aduncus<\/em>) live around the <strong>Amakusa islands<\/strong> in Kumamoto Prefecture, and dolphin-watching tours shallow coral reef in the world<\/strong>, made up of coral species discover in summer 1992. <br \/>The water there is generally cold, and diving activities have only just picked up, just like on the neighbouring island of <strong>Iki <\/strong>(Nagasaki Pref.),, which also harbours similar coral, along with good macro life and large schools of fish.<\/p><p>Coral-wise, the subtropical waters of Miyazaki Prefecture\u2019s <strong>Nichinan<\/strong> are also famous for the beauty of its soft coral reefs, whereas the <strong>Nobeoka<\/strong> area is said to have <strong>one of Japan\u2019s largest in Japan.<\/p><p>Other sites, especially in the <strong>Satsunan islands<\/strong> offer great shipwrecks or sunken WW2 airplanes.<br \/><strong>Yakushima island (<\/strong>Kagoshima Pref.) has a famous sunken <strong>Mitsubishi A6M Zero<\/strong> fighter plane for divers to explore at 20m (<strong>Zero-sen<\/strong><strong> point, Isso<\/strong>).<\/p><p><strong>Karatsu<\/strong>, in Saga Prefecture, is famous for its sometimes violent weather and currents, which led to many shipwrecks in the past. <br \/>Local cargo was mainly porcelain and chinaware, remainder of which are sometimes spotted on local dive sites.<strong><br \/><\/strong><br \/><strong>Yoron island<\/strong> also has an purposely sunk wreck, lying at just over 30 m depth, often visited by schools of tuna target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Genkai Sea<\/a> and Saikai area (islands of Okinoshima, Iki islands, and Got\u014d islands), as well as south Ky\u016bsh\u016b&#8217;s Satsunan Islands.<\/p><p>Their Satsunan Island operations, <a href=\"https:\/\/tokara-dive.jp\/2019sche\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tokara Discovery Cruises,<\/a> offer 3, 4, 5 and 7 night exploratory cruises around the
