Ishigaki island<\/strong>, in the Yaeyama island group, is Japan\u2019s main hotspot for reef manta rays<\/strong> (M<\/em>obula alfredi<\/em>), with a healthy population estimated at 300+ individuals circulating around the local islands, and regularly congregating at the Ishigaki\u2019s cleaning stations and feeding points, which are mostly found in the scenic Kabira Bay<\/strong> area.

While mantas are seen all year round, peak manta season is between June and November, especially the July to September period.
<\/strong>In these months, you will see mantas on the north side of Ishigaki, in Kabira Bay\u2019s famous Manta Scramble<\/strong> area, but also in the Yonara Channel<\/strong>, between Iriomote and Kohama islands.
From December to April, chances of seeing mantas are higher to the south of Ishigaki. especially near the islands of Kuro<\/strong> and Panari<\/strong> and Iriomote<\/strong>.
Iriomote in particular, has a number manta cleaning stations scattered on the southern and eastern sides of the island (Kanokawa Bay<\/strong> and Nakanose<\/strong> area), with the main local manta season being January to the early summer months.<\/p>

While not as common, manta rays are also often spotted (seasonally, usually January to August) around the previously mentioned neighbouring islands, but also near Yonaguni<\/strong> or Miyako<\/strong> islands (especially on the Panata<\/em> dive site), as well as in the Kerama islands<\/strong> (Shimozone area).<\/p>

In 2017, reef manta ray cleaning stations were discovered on Kume island<\/strong> (Kume-jima), located roughly 100 km west of Naha, where it is now possible to observe mantas all year round<\/strong>.
The main cleaning stations are 5 narrow walls lining up from south to north, ranging from 7 to 18m depth, where the 1st<\/sup>, 2nd<\/sup> and 5th<\/sup> wall sections are considered to offer the biggest chances of spotting manta rays.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Reef manta rays (Mobula alfredi) <\/em>are regularly spotted around dive sites of Ky\u016bsh\u016b\u2019s Satsunan island group, including the Tokara islands<\/strong> especially around Kuchinoshima, between the end of October to mid-May.
The Tokara region is particularly rich for pelagic encounters and rays, which also included spotted eagle rays in the autumn months, schooling cownose rays in the spring.
Tthe occasional whale sharks<\/strong> (Rhincodon typus<\/em>) have also occasionally been spotted.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Though much rarer, manta rays have also been spotted seasonally around Honsh\u016b, on the west side of Ch\u016bbu\u2019s Izu Penisula,<\/strong> as well as on dive sites of the Kansai region<\/strong>\u00a0 and are also regular visitors on Shikoku\u2019s Pacific coast <\/strong>dive sites and in the\u00a0Nanp\u014d archipelago’s Izu and Ogasawara islands<\/strong>.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

GIANT \"OCEANIC\" MANTA RAYS<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Giant \u201coceanic\u201d manta rays<\/strong> (M<\/em>obula birostris<\/em>) have also been spotted around the\u00a0 Okinawa region, especially Yonaguni<\/strong> and Miyako islands<\/strong>, but also up to Ky\u016bsh\u016b\u2019s Satsunan islands<\/strong> (see here<\/strong><\/a>), but are much rarer, the vast majority of manta spottings in Japan being reef mantas (M<\/em>obula alfredi<\/em>).<\/p>

Though rare, manta rays<\/strong>, mostly giant \u201coceanic\u201d manta rays (Mobula birostris<\/em>) are regularly spotted in Kant\u014d\u2019s Ogasawara<\/strong> islands<\/strong> area (see here<\/strong><\/a> for more info on the subject).<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

As a side note, all manta rays<\/u> are now classified as part of the mobula<\/em> genus<\/strong>, after a taxonomic reclassification which took place in 2017, more info on this here.<\/strong><\/a><\/p>

Japan\u2019s commonly seen manta rays are reef manta rays<\/strong> (which are indeed mobulids<\/em>), and not<\/em> “mobula rays” in the most commonly accepted sense of the word, as it has been sometimes been written.<\/p>

Japan does have endemic species of mobulas, such as the large endangered spinetail devilray, or mobula japonica<\/em>, and numerous smaller other rays, including cownose rays (Rhinoptera bonasus<\/em>)<\/span> but to make it clear, the rays that have made the Ishigaki area famous are indeed manta rays.<\/strong><\/p>

There’s also a little confusion\/hype surrounding \u201cblack mantas<\/em><\/strong>\u201d in Japan. Yes, melanistic manta rays<\/strong><\/a> are sometimes spotted in the Yaeyama or Kume islands\u2019 cleaning stations, though they’re not the most common type encountered, unlike in some areas such as central Raja Ampat.<\/p>

Melanistic “black<\/em>” mantas are not a different species, just melanistic reef manta rays.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t
