Japan\u2019s cultural heartland, but also offers some solid diving options, especially around the <strong>Kii Peninsula<\/strong>, <strong>on the Pacific coast.<\/strong><\/p><p>Wakayama Prefecture\u2019s <strong>Kushimoto <\/strong>area, located at the southern tip of the Kii Peninsula, is under direct influence of the warm Kuroshio current, which brings warmer water to the area, and to the point of affecting the area&#8217;s climate, which is largely subtropical, and the warmest in Honsh\u016b.<br \/>Because of this, one can spot both <strong>temperate to cold water marine life and also species more commonly found in warmer, subtropical to tropical waters<\/strong>, including <strong>giant sponges and coral reefs<\/strong> formed by over 120 species of coral.<\/p><p>The arrival of a stronger flow of the Kuroshio in the spring to summer months leads to a general <strong>increase of underwater visibility<\/strong> (especially good in places like Wakayama Prefecture\u2019s Susami) and of sightings of warm water\/subtropical species around the entire Kii Peninsula area.<\/p><p><strong>Manta rays<\/strong> and the <strong>occasional hammerhead sharks<\/strong> are also sometimes spotted in the summer months on this section of the Pacific coast.<\/p><p>The Kansai area also includes Hy\u014dgo Prefecture, which faces <strong>three different seas<\/strong>: the <strong>Seto Inland Sea<\/strong>, the <strong>Sea of Japan<\/strong> and the <strong>Pacific Ocean<\/strong>.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The Kansai area offers the possibility to dive healthy <strong>hard and soft coral reefs, with large sponges, anemones, and interesting topography<\/strong>.<br \/>Wakayama Prefecture\u2019s Kushimoto is famous for having <strong>one of the largest colonies of<\/strong> <strong>hard coral tables<\/strong> (<em>Acroporidae<\/em>) in Japan.<\/p><p>Many sites also offer <strong>beautiful soft coral colonies<\/strong>, such as <em>Alcyonaceas<\/em>, notably in Wakayama and Mie Prefectures.<\/p><p>Still in Wakayama Prefecture, Tanabe is well known for its deep-water<strong> colonies of bright yellow anemones<\/strong>, the <em>Halcurias levis Uchida<\/em>, 2004<\/p><p>Topographical highlights include the <strong>Black Tunnel,<\/strong> an arch between two large rock formations, starting at 32 metres, also in Kushimoto (Advanced Open Water or equivalent certification \/ deep training required).<\/p><p>In Hy\u014dgo Prefecture, the <strong>Takeno<\/strong> dive site offers the chance to dive a <strong>25m wide and 15m high cave, with a 40m tunnel<\/strong>, that is only 5m wide at a point.<\/p><p><strong>In Owase (Mie Pref.), a site called Gyosho features an artificial reef <\/strong>made of concrete blocks placed on the sandy bottom. <br \/>It is one of the most popular dive sites in the area, since the blocks attract a lot of life, mainly local reef fish and macro critters, but also seasonal migratory fish.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-50 elementor-inner-column elementor-element class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-4c301cf elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"4c301cf\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><strong>Koza River<\/strong>, in Kansai\u2019s Wakayama Prefecture, is a good place to observe Japan\u2019s endemic <strong>giant salamander<\/strong> (<em>Andrias japonicus<\/em>), which can grow to an impressive 1.5 m in size. It is best to aim for mating season, when the males are guarding the nests.<br \/><br \/>Another spot to see the salamanders is in Ky\u014dto\u2019s Kumogahata \/ Kamogawa river, during freshwater snorkelling trips.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-f0c25fe elementor-widget-divider--view-line elementor-widget href=\"https:\/\/en.japantravel.com\/mie\/osatsu-ama-san-woman-diver-museum\/377\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">dedicated museum<\/a><br \/>The other main places to see the Ama freedivers at work is the <strong>Toba \/ Ise-shima<\/strong> area, also in Mie Prefecture.<br \/>Some areas offer the possibility of spending time with the divers in their <em>ama<\/em> huts and tasting local
