class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The <strong>Kuroshio Current<\/strong> (\u9ed2\u6f6e, <em>Kuroshio<\/em>, literally &#8220;Black Current&#8221;, named after the deeper blue colour of its waters), and is also known as the <strong><em>Japan Current.<\/em><\/strong><\/p><p>The Kuroshio is a warm water, north-flowing current, which transports warm, and tropical water northward toward the polar region.<\/p><p>It is by far <strong>the most important current affecting the Japanese archipelago<\/strong>, where it flows along the west side of the Ry\u016b-Ky\u016b islands, then, passing through the Tokara Strait, along the east coasts of the islands of Ky\u016bsh\u016b, Shikoku and Honsh\u016b.<br \/><strong>The Kuroshio branches out into the following currents:<\/strong><\/p><ul><li>The <strong>Kuroshio Extension<\/strong>, which is the name given to the Kuroshio as it branches east in the Pacific, where it meets the southwards flowing Oyashio Current.<br \/>We will look into the Kuroshio-Oyashio current system in further detail <u>here<\/u>.<br \/><br \/><\/li><li><strong>Kuroshio Countercurrent<\/strong>, which flows southward to the east of the main Kuroshio Current, in the Philippine Sea, roughly 700 km off the coast.<\/li><\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The <strong>Tsushima Current<\/strong> (\u5bfe\u99ac\u6d77\u6d41, <em>Tsushima Kairy\u016b<\/em>) is a secondary branch of the Kuroshio Current flowing along the west coast of Japan. It splits from the Kurushio near Ky\u016bsh\u016b, flowing northwards along the west coasts of Ky\u016bsh\u016b and Honsh\u016b, through the Tsushima Strait (which gives it its name) and into the Sea of Japan. <br \/>The Tsushima Current itself then branches out in two other currents:<\/p><ul><li>The <strong>Tsugaru Current<\/strong> (\u6d25\u8efd\u6696\u6d41,<em> Tsugaru Kairy\u016b<\/em>) is formed when the Tsushima Current, flowing northwards up the Sea of Japan, divides in two branches. The Tsugaru Current is the branch flowing through the west entrance of the Tsugaru Strait, between the islands of Honsh\u016b and Hokkaid\u014d<br \/><br \/><\/li><li>The <strong>S\u014dya Current<\/strong> (\u5b97\u8c37\u6696\u6d41, <em>S\u014dya Kairy\u016b<\/em>), is formed by the branch of the Tsushima Current flowing along the north coast of Hokkaid\u014d, and into the La Perouse Strait between the island of Sakhalin and north Hokkaid\u014d. This current has a relatively stronger flow in the summer than in the winter.<\/li><\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section role as the parent \u89aa, <em>oya,<\/em> providing for and nurturing marine organisms through its nutrient-rich waters), is also known as the Kurile Current.<br \/><br \/><p>The Oyashio is a <strong>subarctic, cold-water oceanic current<\/strong>, <strong>originating in the Arctic Ocean<\/strong>. <br \/>It flows southward via the Bering Sea, passing through the Bering Strait and into the Sea of Okhotsk.<\/p><p>The Oyashio then flows along the east coast of Hokkaid\u014d down to the North Pacific Ocean, along the northeastern coast of Honsh\u016b, where it <strong>collides with the Kuroshio<\/strong> <strong>current\u2019s Kuroshio Extension,<\/strong> and forms the eastbound North Pacific Current.<\/p><\/li><li>The <strong>Liman Current<\/strong> (\u30ea\u30de\u30f3\u6d77\u6d41, <em>Liman<\/em> <em>Kairy\u016b<\/em>) is another cold current flowing southward between the island of Sakhalin and the Asian mainland, carrying colder water from the blue colour of its rich waters) or Japan Current is by far the most important current affecting all the islands of the Japanese archipelago.<br \/>To summarise its movement, the current constitute the western, subtropical boundary section of the clockwise flowing <b>North Pacific Ocean Gyre<\/b>.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-261e7f9 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"261e7f9\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The Kuroshio primarily forms off the coast of the Philippines, from where its powerful warm water flow northwards towards the Japanese islands, first along long the west side of the Ry\u016b-Ky\u016b islands, then, after crossing the Tokara Stait, primarily along the east coasts of the islands of Ky\u016bsh\u016b, Shikoku and Honsh\u016b.<br \/><br \/>As it reaches the northern part of Honsh\u016b Island, the Kuroshio then meets a cold current, the <em>Oyashio <\/em>(or Kurile Current) that flows southward from the Okhotsk Sea, and this collision forms a highly productive, life supporting-mixture of warm and cold waters. <br \/>The main flow then merges and ocean currents in the world, flowing 2 to 4 knots on average<\/b>. <br \/>It can be considered as the <strong>Pacific Ocean\u2019s equivalent of the Atlantic Ocean\u2019s Gulf Stream<\/strong>, in that both currents transport the ocean\u2019s warm, tropical and nutrient rich waters northward, up towards the Polar Regions, with a crucial effect on regional climate and human activities.<\/p><p>Indeed, the Kuroshio has huge influence on the ocean conditions and marine life of Japan.<br \/>It is largely because of the multiple effects Kuroshio current flow that the waters surrounding Japanese islands count among some of the <b>most productive and diverse regions in the world<\/b> in terms of marine life, which is great for the fishing industry, but also for more contemplative activities such as scuba-diving, to which it gives warm and clear waters, coral and biodiversity.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section <strong>Mindanao Current<\/strong>. <br \/>The Kuroshio proper forms as it heads along the east coast of Luzon in the Philippines.<\/p><p>The flow then heads frankly north as it heads up the eastern coast Taiwan, before entering the East China Sea following a <strong>deep trench<\/strong> in the Ry\u016b-Ky\u016b island chain known as the <strong>Yonaguni Depression.<\/strong><\/p><p>The Kuroshio continues heading northwards, flows along Japan, first on a course parallel to the west coasts of the Ry\u016b-Ky\u016b islands, following the <strong>Okinawa Trough,<\/strong> which is the deepest islands, the main flow of the current heads east, and re-enters the Pacific by passing through a gap known as the<strong> Tokara Strait, which greatly increases its strength.<\/strong><\/p><p>A slightly weaker branch of the Kuroshio, called the <strong>Tsushima Current<\/strong>, heads west and enters the Sea of Japan off the island Ky\u016bsh\u016b, and continues flowing northwards along the western coast of Honsh\u016b.<\/p><p>The main Kuroshio Current (the Kuroshio <em>Hon-ry\u016b,<\/em> or main current) flows along the east coast of Japan, <strong>meandering<\/strong> significantly, and notably hitting the Nanp\u014d Archipelago\u2019s Izu islands with considerable force.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-64bb9dd elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"64bb9dd\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>As it reaches the<strong> vicinity of latitude 35\u00b0N, roughly near Kant\u014d\u2019s B\u014ds\u014d Peninsula<\/strong> (which forms the eastern edge of Tokyo Bay), the bulk of the Kuroshio finally distances itself from the east coast of Japan and <strong>follows a more eastward course, in a segment known as the Kuroshio Extension.<\/strong><\/p><p>The Kuroshio Extension then flows <strong>right into the southward-flowing <\/strong><em><strong>Oyashio<\/strong> <\/em>(\u201cParental Current\u201d, named its metaphorical role as a parent, nurturing marine organisms) or Kurile Current, which is a cold subarctic ocean current originating in the Arctic Ocean.<br \/><br \/>The Oyashio itself circulates <strong>counter clockwise in the western North Pacific Ocean,<\/strong> transporting colder polar water into the Sea of Okhotsk and the Pacific Ocean.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-50 elementor-top-column elementor-element 160\u00b0E, <strong>a considerable amount of the main flow<\/strong> <strong>turns south and southwest.<br \/><\/strong>This flow forms the main part of the Kuroshio <strong>countercurrent<\/strong>, which flows southward to the east of the main Kuroshio Current, in the Philippine Sea, approximately 700 km from the coast.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section forms the North Pacific Current<\/b> (also known as the North Pacific West Wind Drift), which heads back east, towards the coasts of North America losing force west of the Hawaiian Islands.<br \/><br \/>While some of the original flow continues east to split off the coast of Canada and form the Alaska and California currents, the<strong> bulk of the flow joins the west-flowing Pacific North Equatorial Current<\/strong> to the south, directing warm water back towards the Philippines, in a clockwise flow that completes the cycle of the North Pacific Ocean flow of Kuroshio Current, and sometimes nicknamed <strong><em>Kuroshio Species.<\/em><\/strong><\/p><p>The eggs and larvae of this squid develop in the East China Sea during winter months, after which adults population use the Kuroshio Current to travel, with minimum energy, to their rich northern feeding grounds located near northwestern Honshu and Hokkaid\u014d.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-50 elementor-top-column elementor-element effect<\/strong> upon the south and southeast coastal regions of Japan, as far north as T\u014dky\u014d.<\/p><p>Another indirect effect of the Kuroshio-Oyashio current system is the creation of powerful coastal <b>upwellings<\/b>, which, combined with Japan unique and complex, mostly volcanic based underwater topography, will bring deep-sea dwelling organisms up with the water.<\/p><p>Off the coasts of Japan, as the warm waters (the current has <strong>surface temperature of 24\u00b0C<\/strong> on average) of the powerful Kuroshio and the colder waters the Oyashio collide, <b>a layer of nutrient-rich water is brought to the surface<\/b>, <b>where the water movement creates strong turbulent circular currents called <em>eddies<\/em><\/b>.<\/p><p>Phytoplankton growing in the surface waters become concentrated on the borders of these eddies, following the swirling motions of the water.<\/p><p>As a result of this complex water circulation, the zooplankton communities in the boundary waters are unique and diverse, which greatly boosts marine populations.<br \/>Kuroshio-specific marine life has long <strong>supported Japan\u2019s extensive fisheries, on both coasts of the the Western Pacific Warm Pool, and flows through parts of South-East Asia\u2019s Coral Triangle, in other words, through one of the world&#8217;s major <strong>marine biodiversity centres<\/strong>, than elsewhere.<\/p><p>These reefs include the recently discovered cold water shallow coral colonies of <strong>Tsushima Island<\/strong>, in the Korea Strait between mainland Japan and the Korean peninsula, or those of <strong>Wakayama Prefecture<\/strong> in central Honsh\u016b, which are thought to <b>constitute the northernmost, non-deep water coral reef ecosystems in the Monsoon cycle, it also has a direct influence local weather in Japan.<\/p><p>Since air temperatures tend to be controlled by heat in ocean surface waters, and the Kuroshio carries warmer water from south to north, current-transported heat often induces cloud formations, which increase the chance of rain and also changes the path of storms.<br \/>During the winter season, for instance, if the Kuroshio takes a large meander, low-pressure zones will shift southward near Honsh\u016b Island, which will increase the chance of snowfalls in
