All Japanese learn English at school – it’s the one and only foreign language that everyone must study as part of Japanese compulsory education.<\/p>

And yet, you’ll find quite a number of people are still uncomfortable using the English they do speak \u2013 this was also not always the case, in more ancient times Japanese did not seem to have major issues learning Dutch, English, German or even French<\/a> for instance) – and this state of affairs is definitely changing with younger generations and generalised Internet access.<\/p>

Comfortable or not, English is quite present in Japan, and encountered in three main strains.<\/p>

First, there’s boring old Standard English<\/strong>, which is what it is, along with two much more colourful local forms: wasei eigo<\/strong><\/em> and kazari eigo<\/strong><\/em>.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Wasei eigo<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Wasei eigo\u00ad<\/em><\/strong> (\u548c\u88fd\u82f1\u9732 literally English made in Japan<\/em>) consists of English words, or idioms, which were either Japanese creations, or existing English words that were given a Japanese meaning or usage quite different to what is found elsewhere.<\/p>

These are extremely common in Japanese (dating back to the post Meiji-Restoration \u201copening\u201d of Japan of 1868), and an integral part of the Japanese language.<\/p>

Some example of wasei eigo<\/em> would be the 1920\u2019s mo-ga<\/strong> (<\/em>\u30e2\u30ac<\/em>) <\/em><\/a> from mo<\/strong>dern-gi<\/strong>rl, bakku-mir\u0101<\/span><\/span><\/strong> <\/em>(\u30d0\u30c3\u30af\u30df\u30e9\u30fc<\/strong>) for a car\u2019s rearview<\/strong> mirror<\/strong>, or kanningu<\/strong> <\/em>(\u30ab\u30f3\u30cb\u30f3\u30b0) an adaptation of the cunning<\/em>, which is not an adjective in Japanese but a noun<\/strong> meaning cheating, especially in an academic context (more examples of wasei-eigo<\/em> can be found here<\/a>).<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

The other form is kazari eigo<\/em>, (<\/strong>\u98fe\u308a\u82f1\u8a9e literally \u201cdecorative English<\/em>\u201d, sometime nicknamed Engrish, Ingrish <\/em>or similar) and this is where things start getting amusing.<\/p>

Kazari eigo<\/em> is basically nonsensical, or just plain weird English words or phrases, used as decorations on Japanese products intended primarily for the Japanese market.<\/p>

It\u2019s fascinating – at first at least – to imagine someone sitting down and dreaming up these oddities, and presenting them to who ever is in charge, and the whole thing being validated.
To cherry-pick an example given below, someone sat down and drafted the following:
“We are the GroupConsist from the from Person Who can stand on One’sown Always Be able to Help Eachother That’s The Spirit of RESCUE,MANHOOD\/ <\/em>
The produced by >> SAS Corporation”
\"\"<\/a><\/em>
This is high-level stuff, right? Which was validated somehow (at SAS corporation, in this case, confident enough to even sign off as The produced<\/em>), and ended printed on dive-equipment roller bags meant to carry innocent divers’ gear around the world…

We don’t really know the brand’s history, other than SAS’ Japanese history began in 1976, as the local branch of a US equipement maker…<\/p>

And somehow, through some mind-boggling process, English words and sentences that do not make any sense, or if they do, are either ludicrous or sometime even downright shocking, end up printed on products sold in stores across the country, and sometimes beyond…<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

One does wonder why the company never had a native speaker of English check the sentence, either formally (by actually paying them to do so and avoid international exposure to such ridicule), or just informally, le’ts say ring up an old’ English-speaking buddy and run the latest batch by them to see if there were any red flags.<\/p>

But no.

<\/strong>How could this be, one might ask?<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Well, the reason is no one (except the odd pair of non-Japanese eyes) really<\/strong> cares about this.<\/strong><\/p>

As the name implies, English here is used for decoration, not communication, no one reads it, is intended to read it and, well, no one cares.<\/p>

This is less the case with products intended for the international market, and there\u2019s a good chance the trend will dwindle out over the years as the younger generation not only speaks better English but is a little more aware of these little issues.<\/p>

In the meantime, it\u2019s still going strong. Example abound, here<\/a> for instance, or here<\/a>, here<\/a> or here<\/a>.<\/p>

And let\u2019s not forget the French equivalent (kazari furansugo<\/em>), which has its own niche in classy products, the Franponais<\/em><\/a>.
Other kazari<\/em> uses of languages exist, we\u2019ve seen a few examples of decorative German (kazari doitsugo)<\/em>, and no doubts other variants exist.<\/p>

Speaking of which, is\u00a0decorative<\/em> use of a living language really one of these only-in-Japan <\/em>things?
Broadly speaking, yes, but decorative Japanese<\/em><\/strong> (kazari nihongo) <\/em>does exist, though it is much less common.<\/p>

Beyond the famous odd or mistaken use of Chinese characters in tattoos<\/a>, the title of absolute master of decorative Japanese<\/strong> equivalent is proudly upheld by a clothing brand: Superdry.<\/a><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

An undisputed king of Kazari nihongo<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Superdry\u2019s decorative Japanese<\/strong> does have Japanese speakers chuckling away <\/a>discreetly, which is understandable since the brand\u2019s most commonly encountered slogan\u300e<\/strong>Superdry<\/strong>\u6975\u5ea6\u4e7e\u71e5\uff08\u3057\u306a\u3055\u3044\uff09\u300f<\/strong>is a heavyweight combination of a Google-Translate<\/em> nonsensical translation of the words Super Dry<\/em> with, in brackets, an injunction to \u201cplease do<\/em>\u201d.<\/p>

And the clothing brand certainly does not shy away from broadly communicating in a non-proof-read,<\/strong> no holds-barred decorative Japanese.<\/strong><\/p>

Could this be part of someone’s revenge plan for all the infamies of kazari-eigo<\/em> in Japan?

When it comes to diving, most Japanese terminology is either wasei eigo<\/em> type adaptation of English terminology, mostly correct, but with expectable oddities.<\/p>

A surface-marker buoy is called a float (<\/em>\u30d5\u30ed\u30fc\u30c8 ), and a shore entry, whatever the terrain, is always a beach-entry<\/em> (\u30d3\u30fc\u30c1\u30a8\u30f3\u30c8\u30ea\u30fc), because, well… life’s a beach?<\/p>

One of our favourites has to be the slightly slangish term daikon (<\/em>\u30c0\u30a4\u30b3\u30f3<\/em>) <\/em>which refers to the white winter radish in standard Japanese but, in the diving world, is a stylish contraction of di<\/strong>ve com<\/strong>puter (dai<\/strong>bu-kon<\/strong>py\u016bta).

As for kazari-eigo\u00a0<\/em>on products, yes we can!<\/p>

Two main brands Japanese equipment brands, Bism and SAS dominate the market, offering high-level kazari-eigo<\/em> which, given the fact that enthusiastic divers often travel the world to dive, is bound to bring a few smiles on a dive boat\u2026<\/p>
